Downloading Games

When Microsoft first began issuing computers with games already on them (i.e. Solitare, Hearts, Spades, MineSweeper), people began looking for ways to play with more than the computer opponent. Through internet access, people began to connect to play checkers, chess or other games. Thus, websites popped up where you can play in comparison to other people around the world. The only exception is you can only play the free version until you either download it permanently on your computer or subscribe.

Addictinggames.com, one of the most common websites for downloading "I'm bored" games, receives thousands of hits a day to play more games (one of my personal favorites being Bejeweled 1 & 2). With that said, it's no wonder larger game corporations like Sony (the developer of Playstation) is willing to put so much money into downloadable games. When its major competitor Microsoft issued Xbox Live, Sony reacted with an online service to accompany its launch of PlayStation 3 in November. Even though Sony's not putting their heart into it, (only receiving about 6 million hits versus Xbox's 108) their games don't have free reign like their systems.

In their place, file sharing is one of the networks which has made downloading games possible. NetFreeGames.com has a system similar to LimeWire where you simply have to search for whatever game you're looking for and download it. However, you are only able to play these by burning them to a disc and only on systems with an emulator. Recently, we have the development of GameTap.com which is quickly taking over the gaming market and making downloading games a bit obsolete. The difference between file sharing games through networks like Morpheus and Net Free Games and GameTap, is it offers hundreds of games from developed systems that are already made PC compatible. Game rigging your computer isn't necessary; all you need is your keyboard and mouse. The files are also safer and less likely to infect your computer. So, in situations where your internet may crash (which if you own a PC will inevitably happen), it's nice to have games downloaded for those moments where you just want to play by yourself.

So what is the largest medium for downloading games? The introduction of Gameplay on mobile phones pushed the industry into cross-platforming with your game system. Before, the mobile version of the games would debut about three to six months after the system. Now Sony has taken to debuting simultaneously. With downloadable games now available for your computer and phone, will it push the market into developing games systems to compete? Even though it is fun to have the latest games downloaded to your phone, the screen is too small and the pixilation isn't up to par. So, download all you want. I don't know about you, but I'll take my Xbox over my LG V-Cast any day.
